What Happens During a Pediatric Eye Exam?

Pediatric eye exams are specialized comprehensive evaluations designed for children from infancy through adolescence. Children cannot always communicate vision problems — they often adapt to blurry vision without realizing anything is wrong.

Who Needs This Service

All children, regardless of whether they pass school vision screenings. School screenings miss up to 75% of children with vision problems. Recommended schedule: 6‑12 months (first exam), 3 years old, before first grade (5‑6 years), and annually throughout the school years. More frequent exams for children with risk factors.

What to Expect

Pediatric exams are adapted to each child's age and developmental stage. Tests do not require the child to read or even speak. We use pictures, games, and specialized equipment. Evaluations include: visual acuity at each distance, eye alignment and movement, binocular vision and depth perception, color vision, eye pressure, and a full dilated evaluation of internal eye structures.

Why Choose Us

Our doctors specialize in making eye exams a positive experience for children of all ages, including infants. We use age-appropriate equipment and techniques to ensure accurate results even for the youngest patients. We are committed to partnering with parents to support their child's vision and learning.

Insurance & Cost for Pediatric Eye Exams

The Affordable Care Act requires vision screening benefits for children on many health plans. Typically covered: • Annual pediatric eye exam under vision insurance • Dilated examination for children on most plans • Medical exam when evaluating amblyopia, strabismus, or developmental concerns Often out-of-pocket: • Vision exam copay • Glasses or contacts if prescribed (through eyewear allowance) • Specialty testing beyond standard exam

Questions, answered

Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Eye Exams

My child passed the school vision screening — do they still need an exam?

Yes. School screenings are not comprehensive and miss many vision problems, including those that affect near vision, eye coordination, and focusing ability.

What age should my child have their first eye exam?

The American Optometric Association recommends the first comprehensive eye exam — comprehensive exam between 6‑12 months of age, before vision problems can affect development.

How do you test a baby's vision?

Infants cannot read a chart, but we use specialized techniques including preferential looking tests, retinoscopy, and examining the eye's reflexes to accurately assess vision and eye health.

Can vision problems affect my child's learning?

Absolutely. Up to 80% of classroom learning is visual. Undetected vision problems are often misidentified as attention or learning difficulties. Annual exams are essential for school-age children.

Are pediatric eye exams covered by insurance?

Yes. Most vision plans cover comprehensive pediatric eye exams. Medical insurance may apply when evaluating specific conditions like lazy eye or crossed eyes. We verify your child's coverage at scheduling and explain any copays upfront.
