What Happens During a Contact Lens Fitting & Exam?

A contact lens exam extends beyond a standard eye exam to include the measurements, evaluations, and trial fittings needed to prescribe the ideal contact lens for your eyes. Contact lenses sit directly on the cornea, so a precise fit is essential for both vision quality and eye health.

Who Needs This Service

Anyone interested in wearing contact lenses for the first time, current contact lens wearers due for their annual lens evaluation, people experiencing discomfort or vision changes with their current lenses, and those interested in specialty lenses (multifocals, toric lenses for astigmatism, scleral lenses, or ortho-k for myopia control).

What to Expect

Your contact lens exam includes a comprehensive eye exam — comprehensive exam plus: corneal topography (mapping the shape of your cornea), tear film evaluation, pupil and iris measurements, selection and application of trial lenses, slit-lamp assessment of lens fit on the eye, and a final vision check. For new wearers, we also include contact lens insertion, removal, and care instruction.

Why Choose Us

We offer the full spectrum of contact lens options, from daily disposables to specialty scleral lenses and myopia control lenses for children. Our contact lens specialists stay current with the latest lens technology to find the best solution for your eyes and lifestyle.

Insurance & Cost for Contact Lens Fitting & Exams

Contact lens exams and fittings have a separate fee from a standard eye exam on virtually all plans. Vision insurance often provides a contact lens allowance or fitting benefit, but it is separate from your glasses benefit. You cannot use both allowances in the same benefit period on most plans. Typically covered: • Contact lens evaluation and fitting fee (partial or full on many vision plans) • Annual supply of contact lenses through plan allowance • Follow-up fitting visit within a defined period Often out-of-pocket: • Fitting fee balance not covered by plan • Premium or specialty lenses beyond allowance • Separate exam copay plus fitting fee

Coverage varies by plan — we verify your benefits before treatment

Call before your visit and we will check your vision and medical benefits so there are no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions About Contact Lens Fitting & Exams

Do I need a separate contact lens exam if I already had an eye exam?

Yes. A contact lens prescription requires additional measurements beyond a glasses prescription. Contact lens exams and fittings have a separate fee from a standard eye exam.

Can I wear contacts if I have astigmatism?

Absolutely. Toric contact lenses are specially designed to correct astigmatism. Most people with astigmatism can wear contacts successfully.

How long does a contact lens fitting take?

Approximately 60‑90 minutes for a new fitting. You will try lenses, and your doctor will evaluate the fit. You may take home a trial pair, then return for a follow-up after wearing them.

Are daily or monthly contacts better?

Both have advantages. Daily disposables are the most hygienic option and convenient for occasional wearers. Monthly lenses can be more economical for full-time wearers. Your doctor can recommend the best option for your lifestyle.

Is there an extra cost for a contact lens fitting?

Yes. Contact lens fittings have a separate fee from the eye exam on most plans. Many vision plans cover or offset this cost — we check your benefits and explain your out-of-pocket amount before the fitting begins.
