What Is Digital Eye Strain?

Digital eye strain (also called computer vision syndrome) refers to a group of eye and vision problems that result from prolonged use of digital devices — computers, tablets, e-readers, and smartphones. The average American spends more than 11 hours per day looking at screens. While digital screens do not permanently damage eyes, the symptoms can significantly impact comfort and productivity.

When to seek care

See an eye doctor if symptoms persist despite making ergonomic and environmental changes, or if you have never had an eye exam — comprehensive exam and use screens extensively. An uncorrected refractive error is often an overlooked driver of digital eye strain. Your doctor can recommend computer glasses or a workspace prescription if needed.

Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain

Call (662) 327‑7271
  • Eye fatigue or tired eyes

  • headaches

  • blurred or double vision after screen use

  • dry or irritated eyes

  • neck, shoulder, or back pain

  • difficulty refocusing from screen to distance

  • increased light sensitivity after screen sessions.

Causes & Risk Factors

Extended near focus; reduced blink rate (blink rate drops by up to 60% during screen use, increasing tear evaporation); uncorrected or under-corrected vision problems; screen glare and reflections; poor monitor positioning; lighting conditions; and blue light exposure — though research on blue light and eye damage remains inconclusive.

Treatment Options

  1. Overview

The 20‑20‑20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds; lubrication (artificial tears to compensate for reduced blinking); computer glasses with anti-reflective coatings and the correct prescription for screen distance; adjusting monitor height, distance (16‑28 inches), and brightness; matte screen filters to reduce glare; ergonomic workstation setup.

Insurance & Cost for Digital Eye Strain

Digital eye strain evaluation is covered as part of a comprehensive eye exam under most vision plans. Computer glasses, blue-light coatings, and ergonomic recommendations may be covered through your eyewear allowance. Treatment for underlying dry eye or uncorrected refractive error may bill separately. Typically covered: • Comprehensive eye exam to rule out uncorrected vision problems • Computer or occupational prescription lenses through vision plan • Anti-reflective coating on many vision plans Often out-of-pocket: • Blue-light filtering lenses (coverage varies) • Premium computer lens designs • OTC artificial tears for screen-related dryness

Frequently Asked Questions About Digital Eye Strain

Does screen time damage your eyes permanently?

Current evidence does not support that screens cause permanent eye damage in adults. Digital eye strain symptoms are temporary and relievable. However, excessive screen time in children may be associated with increased myopia risk, and limiting screen time in kids is still recommended.

Do blue-light-blocking glasses actually work?

The evidence is mixed. Studies have not consistently shown that blue-light-blocking lenses reduce eye strain more than standard anti-reflective lenses. The main benefits of computer glasses come from the anti-reflective coating and correct prescription, not necessarily the blue-light filter.

How far should my monitor be from my face?

The ideal monitor distance is typically 16‑28 inches (arm's length) from your eyes, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. This position reduces neck strain and allows comfortable focus.

Are computer glasses covered by insurance?

A comprehensive exam for digital eye strain is covered by vision insurance. Computer-specific glasses may be covered through your eyewear allowance or as a second pair on some plans. We review your benefits and recommend the most effective solution for screen use.
