What Happens During a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

A comprehensive eye exam is a thorough evaluation of your vision and overall eye health performed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Unlike a basic vision screening, a comprehensive exam checks for a wide range of eye diseases and conditions — many of which have no early symptoms.

Who Needs This Service

Everyone benefits from regular comprehensive eye exams. Children should have their first exam between 6‑12 months, again at 3 years, and before starting school. Adults under 40 with no risk factors can be seen every 2 years. Adults over 40, contact lens wearers, and those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or family history of eye disease should be seen annually.

What to Expect

Your exam will include: a review of your health history and current medications, visual acuity testing (the eye chart), refraction to determine your glasses prescription, binocular vision testing, eye pressure measurement (tonometry), a slit-lamp examination of the front of the eye, and a dilated fundus exam to evaluate the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. The entire exam typically takes 45‑90 minutes.

Why Choose Us

Our doctors use the latest diagnostic technology including digital retinal imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and visual field testing to give you the most thorough evaluation possible. We take time to explain your results and answer all your questions.

Insurance & Cost for Comprehensive Eye Exams

Comprehensive eye exams are covered by most vision insurance plans once every 12 or 24 months, with a copay typically due at check-in. If a medical condition is found during the exam — glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, or cataracts — that portion may bill to your medical insurance, and you may have separate copays for vision and medical services on the same visit. Typically covered: • Annual or biennial comprehensive exam under vision plan • Refraction and glasses prescription • Basic disease screening (pressure, retinal exam) Often out-of-pocket: • Vision exam copay due at check-in • Dilation fee on some plans • Retinal imaging beyond plan allowance • Medical portion copay if disease is diagnosed

Frequently Asked Questions About Comprehensive Eye Exams

How long does a comprehensive eye exam take?

A typical comprehensive eye exam takes 45‑90 minutes. If you are being dilated, plan for an extra 30‑45 minutes and arrange for someone to drive you home if needed.

Will my eyes be dilated?

Dilation allows your doctor to examine the back of your eye thoroughly. It is recommended at least every 1‑2 years. Your doctor will discuss whether dilation is appropriate for your visit.

What should I bring to my eye exam?

Bring your current glasses and/or contact lenses, a list of all medications you take, your insurance cards, and any prior eye exam records if you are a new patient.

How often should I get an eye exam if I do not wear glasses?

Even without glasses, annual exams are important for detecting eye diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration that have no early symptoms.

How much does a comprehensive eye exam cost with insurance?

Most vision plans cover a comprehensive exam with a copay — typically due at check-in. Without insurance, exam fees vary by practice. We verify your benefits before your appointment so you know what to expect. Medical conditions found during the exam may bill separately.
