What Is Retinal Detachment?
Retinal detachment is a medical emergency in which the retina — the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye — separates from its underlying supportive tissue. Without prompt treatment, vision loss can be permanent. The retina cannot function when detached, and surgery within hours or days is often critical to saving vision.
When to seek care
A retinal detachment is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY. Go immediately to an eye care provider or emergency room if you experience sudden floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow crossing your vision. Same-day evaluation and treatment dramatically improve outcomes.
