What to Expect at a Pediatric Eye Exam

Female Child Eye Exam 1280x853

Learn what to expect at your child’s eye exam at Golden Triangle Eye Center in Columbus, MS. From tests to results, we make pediatric vision care easy.

Children’s vision is constantly developing, so catching vision problems early can make a lifelong difference. At Golden Triangle Eye Center, pediatric eye exams are designed to be thorough, supportive, and child-friendly—especially for young patients who may be nervous or unfamiliar with a medical setting. Continue reading to discover what happens during a typical pediatric eye exam and how our team ensures your child has a positive and productive experience.

Step-by-Step: What Happens During the Exam

When you arrive, your child will check in at the front desk where our staff will gather basic information and verify insurance. Children five and older typically receive a full set of diagnostic tests, including: Visual field testing Dry eye screening Color contrast sensitivity OCT imaging Autorefraction Younger children—especially under five—may only undergo certain tests depending on their ability to sit still and focus. For these little ones, we prioritize comfort and adjust the testing process to meet them where they are.

Creating a Calm and Supportive Environment

It’s normal for children to feel unsure in a clinical setting. That’s why our staff is trained to respond with patience and care. If a child becomes upset, we stop the testing immediately and shift to a calmer environment, often moving them to the exam room to wait for the doctor. Parents are always welcome—and required—to be in the room with their child during the exam. We also require that all children be accompanied by an adult over 18. Our open-office design allows caregivers to supervise from nearby seating areas when siblings are present.

Doctor-Led, Kid-Friendly Exams

Our optometrists are excellent with kids and know how to make the process fun and interactive. For non-readers, we use Snellen charts featuring familiar images like horses and strawberry cakes. A series of simple cover tests helps check eye alignment, and we screen for colorblindness using basic red, green, and blue indicators. Manual refractions are available when children are too young or too restless for machine-based testing.

Prescription and Results on the Spot

One of the biggest advantages of visiting Golden Triangle Eye Center is our commitment to same-day service. If your child needs glasses, you’ll receive the prescription before leaving the exam area, and our large eyewear selection makes it easy to find the right frames. If a more serious issue is detected, we’ll refer your child to a pediatric ophthalmologist or specialist. Our comprehensive exams are designed to identify not only refractive issues, but also potential health concerns that require further medical attention.

Special Needs and Sensory-Sensitive Care

While we don’t alter the exam itself, our team regularly sees children with autism and ADHD. We adapt our approach to meet their needs, offering a calm, open setting and a gentle, experienced staff that knows how to work with a wide range of abilities.

What About Dilation?

Standard wellness exams don’t include dilation unless there’s a medical reason to do so. When needed, dilation takes about 10 minutes to take effect, and the results—blurry near vision and light sensitivity—can last three to five hours. Most kids can return to school or daycare the same day.
